Design isn’t just about what looks good—it’s about what works for everyone.
As creatives and designers, it’s easy to get caught up in aesthetics—the colors, layouts, and visuals that catch the eye. But when you start designing from a place of empathy and awareness, you realize that design holds a deeper responsibility: it shapes how people access information, how they interact with brands, and how they feel seen—or unseen.
•••
That’s what universal design is all about.
•••
In this Episode 35 of Creative Brews, I explored the importance of universal design, why accessibility matters more than ever, and how this mindset transforms the way we create. From my own book The Daily Divine to websites, social media, and brand systems, I’ve seen how thoughtful design can break barriers and create welcoming experiences for all
What Is Universal Design?
Universal design is the practice of creating products, spaces, and experiences that can be used and enjoyed by everyone—regardless of ability, age, or background.
It asks important, human questions like:
Can someone with limited mobility navigate this easily?
Are my colors accessible for people with visual impairments?
Does my content include captions or alt text?
Is my layout readable with a screen reader?
Accessibility isn’t a feature; it’s a foundation. And it’s one of the purest forms of empathy in action.
Why Universal Design Matters for Creatives and Businesses
Universal design isn’t just a moral or creative choice—it’s a smart business strategy.
1. You Reach More People
When your website, branding, and content are accessible, more people can interact with your business. A visually impaired customer, a dyslexic reader, or a client with limited mobility can engage with your brand without barriers.
That’s not just good design—it’s good business.
2. It Builds Trust with Clients Who Need Inclusive Solutions
Not every business owner has the same abilities. You never know who is visiting your website, reaching out for branding services, or looking for a designer they can trust.
A blind business owner wants to know:
“Is my designer capable of creating something I—and my audience—can actually use?”
When you design universally…When you understand accessibility…When you’ve already woven those principles into your process…
You’re telling clients with disabilities: “You are safe here. You are seen. You are supported.”
And that is powerful.
3. You Future-Proof Your Brand and Offerings
Accessibility laws, digital standards, and business expectations continue to shift. Universal design prepares businesses for growth, evolution, and long-term success. Brands that prioritize accessibility now will stand out—and stay relevant—later.
4. It Elevates Customer Experience
Accessible design helps everyone. Readable text, clear color contrast, intuitive navigation, and logical layout benefit every user, not just those with disabilities. When something is easier to use, it becomes easier to trust.
My Journey Into Mindful, Inclusive Design
When I first started designing, I focused heavily on visuals. But through my own projects and working with different clients, I began to see the deeper impact design has on people’s lives.
•••
Design can make someone feel welcomed—or completely left out. I realized I didn’t want to create work that was only beautiful. I wanted it to be usable, inclusive, and mindful. I wanted my clients—all of them—to feel safe and confident knowing their brand was built with intention and accessibility from the ground up.
Now, every project at KBCreativeNC begins with two questions:
Who am I designing for?
And how can I make them feel included?
Designing With Empathy:
3 Mindset Shifts for Creatives
1. Design with Awareness, Not Assumption
You never know who’s interacting with your work. Assumptions exclude; awareness opens doors.
2. Keep Accessibility Simple
Readable fonts, alt text, captions, meaningful hierarchy, and strong contrast are easy to implement—yet they create massive impact.
3. Lead With Heart
When you design with empathy, your work becomes more human, more thoughtful, and ultimately more effective.
